PROJECT 124
Nestled within the indigenous vegetation of the St Francis Links, Milkwood Retreat is a home shaped by its landscape. Two dense clusters of protected Milkwood trees guided the design from day one, influencing the layout, courtyards, pathways, and even the approach. From the street, only a curved boundary wall and grounded garage hint at what lies beyond, leading visitors along a quiet, meandering path through the Milkwood forest into the heart of the home.
Inside, the house opens into a simple L-shaped plan wrapped around a sheltered courtyard, protected from the coastline’s prevailing winds. An elegant above-ground pool anchors the space, while a generous veranda connects the living and bedroom areas along the north-eastern edge. Generous volumes, clean lines, and carefully positioned openings welcome soft, dappled light throughout the day, with planted courtyards re-introducing Milkwoods right into the centre of the home.
Every detail was intentionally considered – from orientation and wind protection to finishes that allow the home to settle effortlessly into its surroundings. Milkwood Retreat is a calm, grounded space that doesn’t demand attention but quietly invites you in. It reflects why thoughtful design matters and reinforces DMV Architecture’s ongoing presence on the St Francis Links.
