PROJECT 3224

Project 3224 was conceived as a calm architectural response to the meeting point of dune and ocean. Positioned directly on the beachfront, the design explored how a home could belong to the landscape rather than dominate it. Low horizontal forms stretch across the site to reduce visual impact, while courtyards, pergolas and sheltered terraces create protected outdoor living areas that remain comfortable in changing coastal weather. Movement through the home becomes a gradual transition between inside, outside and horizon.

The material palette was intentionally restrained and tactile. Soft mineral plaster, natural stone plinths and warm timber elements reflect the tones and textures of the surrounding dunes, allowing the building to settle into its environment. A sculptural chimney anchors the composition and organises the living spaces around a central gathering point, while transparent social areas open toward long ocean views and private rooms retreat into quieter wings.

Water elements extend the landscape into the architecture through linear reflective pools that capture sky and light while tempering the coastal microclimate. Although never constructed, the concept remains an exploration of coastal living shaped by shelter, shade and view — demonstrating how architecture can mediate between comfort and a powerful natural setting, allowing the experience of the beach to become part of everyday life.

LOCATION

Sedgefield, Western Cape

Sedgefield is a relaxed coastal village along South Africa’s Garden Route, tucked between Knysna and Wilderness. Known for its wide estuary, lakes and surrounding fynbos-covered hills, it offers a slower pace of life centred around nature, outdoor living and community.

With long sandy beaches, birdlife, watersports and its popular Saturday markets, Sedgefield feels less like a tourist stop and more like a place to exhale — where the lagoon meets the sea and everyday life naturally drifts outdoors.
