PROJECT 15/713

This riverside getaway is situated alongside the Kromme River. Making use of the existing footprint of the building, the architectural additions and alterations of the building were limited to the 50-year flood line and a maximum of a 5 cubic meter excavation.

This has meant that the new building had to be perched on top of the existing boathouse with the aim to stay within the realms of the specific restrictions.

Our client presented us with a brief for more accommodation than what the existing building could offer, to realise the dreams of the client we pushed the accommodation another level higher while retaining the living area more closely connected to the river.

The end result is a curved vertical architectural expression, clad with timber to ensure the new building blends with the natural vegetated cliff behind.

LOCATION

Kromme River, Eastern Cape

The Kromme River, just outside St Francis Bay, offers a peaceful and scenic way of living where water, landscape and lifestyle come together effortlessly. Lined with homes that open directly onto the river’s edge, it is a place known for its calm waterways, abundant birdlife and uninterrupted views toward the mountains and estuary. Days here are shaped by boating, fishing, paddling and slow afternoons on the deck, with the tide creating a gentle rhythm to daily life. Living on the Kromme is about space, serenity and a close connection to nature, making it one of the most sought after residential settings in the area.
