PROJECT 178
This concept for a Karoo farmhouse reimagines traditional rural architecture through a contemporary, passive-design lens, turning the classic farmhouse idea on its head. Instead of the small openings and heavy enclosure typical of historic Karoo dwellings, the design introduces expansive glazing to connect the interior deeply with the vast landscape, bringing the farmhouse elegantly into the 21st century.
A set of exaggerated roof overhangs, combined with high-performance thermal insulation, forms a protective “umbrella” under which the internal spaces sit as loose-fit elements. Walls are intentionally thick where thermal mass is beneficial, while intelligent glazing is placed only where it adds value and does not compromise environmental performance. Raised plinths promote natural ventilation, one of the key passive strategies embedded in the concept.
Materiality is honest and grounded: natural stone harvested from the site anchors the building to its context and prefabricated structural steel components are used to streamline construction in the remote farm location. Together, these elements create a refined yet robust vision for a modern Karoo farmhouse, one that is deeply rooted in place while embracing a forward-looking architectural approach.
