GRASS ROOF

When DMV Architecture was first approached, the client already had a design in place and partial drawings completed. However, through early discussions it became clear that the project held far more potential than what was on paper. We believed strongly that this was an opportunity to create a landmark for the area rather than another familiar farm stall. What began as a simple commercial brief quickly shifted into a chance to reimagine what a rural stop could be, both functionally and visually, and to do so with a sense of character and intent.

By returning to the core idea and rebuilding the concept from the beginning, we were able to break away from the expected and design something with personality and presence. One of the standout ideas, the grassed roof, became an instant talking point and set the tone for the rest of the project. The result is a space that feels rooted in its surroundings yet refreshingly unexpected, showing that even the simplest building type can become memorable when approached with curiosity and creativity.

LOCATION

Sardinia Bay, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

Sardinia Bay, on the western edge of Port Elizabeth, is known for its unspoilt coastline, rolling dunes and protected natural landscape, making it one of the city’s most scenic outdoor destinations. Just inland, the Sardinia Bay Golf and Wildlife Estate offers secure residential living surrounded by fairways, fynbos and free-roaming wildlife, while nearby landmarks like the well-loved Grass Roof farm stall and restaurant bring a playful, community-centred charm to the area. Together, the beach, the estate and the local gathering spots create a setting where coastal calm, countryside living and nature-driven design all meet.
